The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k award winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was presented with the prize on mid-October as his new release the album was chosen as the best record of the past year.

He has chosen to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the crucial part small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing my current career if it weren't for all the performances I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was just getting going," said Sam Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

Recently, top acts including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its efforts to support the industry, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which benefits independent venues.

He also participated, collecting more than £100,000 on his recent tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds assisted locations that were confronting imminent closure due to challenges caused by flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues received funding support in modernizing infrastructure and gear that positively impacted musicians and audiences.

"The notion that money from concerts in big venues helps the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has commented.

The musician is not the first artist to contribute his honor prize money to worthy causes.

Back when they received the prize in 1996 for their album Different Class, vocalist Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would donate their prize money to the non-profit the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist shared her bounty across several good causes, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

In recent years, they donated their funds to the youth organization that supported their group, as well as other independent music bodies.

And the 1994 recipients the group donated their prize to a MS organization after a friend was found to have the disease.

"Winning was sufficient," said vocalist Small. "The prize was the bonus but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our victory touched somebody else's life."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had saved a couple of grassroots venues in that region, by placing them under local control.

The first in that area and The Croft in that location were bought under the community ownership program, which is supported by the arts council and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the properties.
