China's Figure Skaters Face Investigation After Displaying Prop Weapon during Competition

ISU officials have launched a formal inquiry following two Chinese figure skaters were seen with what looked like a replica weapon at an international skating competition.

Broadcast video showed the skaters sitting alongside a large toy shaped like a missile marked “DF-61” while waiting for their scores at the “kiss and cry” zone on Saturday.

This model is a recently introduced Chinese-made ground-launched intercontinental ballistic missile designed for carrying nuclear weapons, which was displayed at a military parade last month.

Officials is aware that an inappropriate plush item seems to have been among those thrown on to the ice by spectators after a routine at the ISU Figure Skating Grand Prix Cup of China event,” the ISU commented via a release.

“The soft toy was subsequently handled by the skaters who had just performed. We apologizes for this occurrence and will investigate further.”

Ren and Xing finished eighth out of ten teams in the ice dance event, with the victory going to the American pair of the United States.
