Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
